Getting better, or even just being good, is often uncomfortable.
Think of it like working out. Your muscles don’t just get stronger because you wish they would get stronger. Your muscles get stronger because you work them hard, you literally break them down, you’re sore afterward, and then they have to rebuild. To keep your muscles when you already have them, you have to do much the same thing; you can’t just sit back and hope they will stay.
So, when challenges pop up, which you know they will, remind yourself that this is a standard step on the path to improvement, or even just remaining the amazing mom you are.
I know it’s not that simple. While, some challenges have a clear lesson, we can’t overlook the challenges that arise every day. For me these days, every morning presents a challenge when my little guy decides he’s hungry and goes from zero to, like, 160 in an instant. Of course, this tends to happen right about when I’m getting out of the shower and can’t get dressed and do all the other getting-ready things while holding and consoling a baby.
It’s an every day challenge. Am I gleaning the lesson from it every morning? Nope.
Should I be? Maybe.
Will I eventually? Probably.
I think the lessons come when we’re ready for them, so, just recognize that they’re coming and might (hopefully will) help.
